HTTP Urges FCC to Protect Broadcast Ownership Limits for Fair Media Access
On August 21, 2025, /http/ submitted formal comments to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) calling for the protection of existing broadcast ownership limits. These rules are essential to preserve fair competition, prevent excessive consolidation, and ensure that local voices continue to be represented in media markets.
The letter, addressed to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr and Commissioners Anna M. Gomez and Olivia Trusty, emphasizes the risks posed by recent deregulatory actions and mergers, such as the proposed Nexstar–Tegna transaction, which could significantly reduce independent media ownership across the United States.
For Hispanic audiences in particular, maintaining diverse and independent broadcasting is vital. Nearly half of U.S. Hispanic adults rely on Hispanic news outlets at least occasionally, with many seeking bilingual or language-flexible content. Weakening ownership limits threatens to diminish this access and reduce authentic coverage of community priorities.
HTTP advocates FCC action to uphold its statutory responsibility to protect the public interest, ensuring that broadcasting remains competitive, representative, and accessible to all communities.
